Start with one shelf
Empty one shelf and group what you actually use: everyday plates, mugs, breakfast supplies and occasional serving dishes. Put duplicates and rarely used pieces aside. Return the everyday items first, close to where you use them.
Measure the opening, not just the shelf
Record usable width, depth and height. Hinges and the door frame can reduce the opening. A shelf that fits inside the cupboard may still be awkward to insert. Leave room to lift a mug or plate without scraping the shelf above.
Test a second level
Make a cardboard footprint for a shelf riser and check where its legs would sit. The useful gain is easier access, not necessarily more items. Avoid balancing a riser on another organiser or loading it beyond its stated limit.
Compare the approaches
| Option | When to consider it |
|---|---|
| Shelf riser | Useful for separating short stacks of plates and mugs. Check clearance both above and below. |
| Handled basket | Useful for breakfast packets or baking supplies that can be removed together. A deep basket can hide small items. |
| Leave the shelf open | Often best for tall bottles or large mixing bowls. An organiser can reduce usable room. |
Buying a full matching set before measuring. One well-fitted organiser is a better experiment.
A manufacturer example
An expandable shelf is one design to consider; check the current manufacturer dimensions before buying.
Read the Joseph Joseph CupboardStore expandable shelf specification.
Before you choose
Check the exact model, usable dimensions, materials, care instructions and return terms on the retailer’s current listing. Similar names and photographs can conceal different sizes. Make a paper footprint if fit is tight, and start with one item before buying a set.
This guide compares storage approaches. We have not hands-on tested the products. Manufacturer information is identified where used; availability and prices are not verified here.
Use the measure-first checklist
Test a second level.
Try a cardboard footprint first. One well-fitting insert is enough to test the idea.
VARIERA shelf insert
Create a second level inside a cupboard so a short stack of plates can sit below cups or glasses. The white steel insert uses shelf height that would otherwise be empty.
Check the fit: W32 × D28 × H16cm overall. Check cupboard width, depth, hinges and space above the insert; 16cm is not the clear space underneath.
Check current assembly and loading guidance before use. Listing checked 7 October 2026; no hands-on testing.
