Choose an organiser for a narrow cutlery drawer

A compact cutlery tray can recover drawer width, but overlapping compartments trade width for height. Check the drawer closed as well as open.

Measure the usable space

Measure between the drawer sides and from the base to the lowest point above it. Account for the opening and any internal fittings. External cabinet measurements are not enough.

Count what needs to fit

Lay out the everyday knives, forks and spoons. Separate serving utensils and occasional pieces. A tray sized for everyday cutlery can be more practical than a large tray holding everything.

Check loaded clearance

Use the dimensions of the exact organiser and allow for cutlery extending above it. Make a cardboard footprint before ordering. After installation, close the drawer slowly; never force it if a handle catches.

Compare the approaches

OptionWhen to consider it
Overlapping compartmentsWorth considering when width is scarce and height is adequate. Check loaded clearance.
Flat compartment trayEasier to see each section, but usually uses more drawer width.
Individual dividersUseful for an unusual drawer shape. Check that they stay in place during use.
A mistake to avoid
Assuming compact means suitable for a shallow drawer. A taller tray can jam when loaded.

Before you choose

Check the exact model, usable dimensions, materials, care instructions and return terms on the retailer’s current listing. Similar names and photographs can conceal different sizes. Make a paper footprint if fit is tight, and start with one item before buying a set.
